google talk - cannot authenticate to server. Have tried everything!
guys I have tried everything. Google talk was working fine until yesterday. I had a virus alert. Windows recommend that I install their enterprise suite to get rid of the trojans. I did all of this and then I uninstalled the enterprise suite (got the free trial version). during this, I was installing the free anti virus "avast". that installed no problem. viruses had been removed, all was great. Or so I thought...... Ever since yesterday, I cannot log into my google talk. Even when I typed "www.gmail.com" into the address bar, a warning popped up saying this site no regognised etc (which I put down to the avast antivirus - I bypassed this and got into gmail no problem). when I try to log into googletalk, I keep getting the same error message "could not authenticate to server" I have checked my firewall settings, google talk is allowed. I even put in the talk.google.com with the 5222 port number. Still no joy. I have now uninstalled Avast (thinking it was a clash between it and google). But I still cannot log into googletalk.
I have a windows desktop (vista) and it's working perfectly. What I'm having trouble with is my little notebook (windows xp). I use mozilla firefox (most up to date version)
I have also uninstalled googletalk and reinstalled it.... To no avail.
Any ideas please??! I'm doing my nut!!
Yvonne

The virus may have changed the Host files of your computer. Host files are responsible for resolving name servers to its IP and vice versa. Check if your Host files are not altered...

I'm a complete novice - how on earth do I do that? Everything else appears to be working fine on the notebook, except for google talk

I think first off all you need to check if you have personal firewall software installed, or if your computer is behind a proxy server that requires a username and password. In order to get rid of the above issue, you need to check out the following link. If your firewall is not listed above, please add the Google Talk application (googletalk.exe) to the approved list.

Re: google talk - cannot authenticate to server. Have tried everything!
Only firewall is the windows one and google talk IS allowed. I have tried everything that is stated on every darn help forum and I still cannot get it to work. It was working perfectly until the other day now it "cannot authenticate to server". Bloody annoying. I cannot contact google about it, their help pages are useless
